Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Now recognized as one of the most influential books of the twentieth century, Silent Spring exposed the destruction of wildlife through the widespread use of pesticides Rachel Carson's Silent Spring alerted a large audience to the environmental and human dangers of pesticides, spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. Despite condemnation in the press and heavy-handed attempts by the chemical industry to ban the book, Carson succeeded in creating a new public awareness of the environment which led to changes in government and inspired the ecological movement. It is thanks to this book, and the help of many environmentalists, that harmful pesticides such as DDT were banned from use in the US and countries around the world. This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes an introduction by Lord Shackleton, a preface by World Wildlife Fund founder Julian Huxley, and an afterword by Carson's biographer Linda Lear.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. First printing. With the ownership signature of Harrison B. Tordoff at the top of the half-title page. A nice association copy, as Tordoff was a prominent ornithologist and conservationist. He was the head of the Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota. A finch expert, he was also dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Kirtland's warbler and, especially, peregrine falcons. He was responsible for the reintroduction of peregrines to the upper Mississippi River region via the Midwest Peregrine Restoration Project which he founded. He helped hatch more than 1,200 peregrine chicks. Peregrines were of course the unfortunate poster bird for species that declined due to eggshell thinning from DDT, the pernicious chemical that is the subject ofSilent Spring. For a full biography of Tordoff, see the tribute from Tordoff's former student, the famous ornithologist Frank Gill. Green cloth boards, gold lettering, yellow top stain, patterned endpapers. First printing stated. With drawings by Louis and Lois Darling. Near fine with just a little rubbing to board edges and spine ends. In a very good jacket with some edge wear and shallow chipping, especially to top of spine and either side of spine. Some faint red discoloration on rear panel from rubbing. But a working copy of someone important in the field.

Add to basketOriginal boards. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. Twenty-Second Impression. Dustjacket: light wear to corners & edges, light scuffing to covers. ; With illustrations. ; Silent Spring: The Classic That Launched the Environmental Movement by Rachel Carson is a landmark work of environmental science writing, first published in 1962. The book exposed the devastating ecological effects of indiscriminate pesticide use, particularly DDT, and challenged the unchecked power of the chemical industry. Through compelling scientific evidence and poetic prose, Carson argued that these chemicals were poisoning wildlife, contaminating water supplies, and endangering human health. Her warning that nature could fall silentwithout birdsong or insectscaptured the public imagination and sparked widespread concern. Silent Spring is credited with inspiring the modern environmental movement, influencing policy changes, and leading to the eventual ban of DDT in the United States. More than six decades on, it remains a powerful call to respect the balance of nature and to consider the long-term consequences of human actions on the environment.
